3 secrets to creating a professional-looking cosplay
You've spent hours on your costume, but something still feels like it's missing. You're looking for that thing that would take your creation from "nice" to "damn! wow!"
The difference between a good costume and a cosplay that really turns heads doesn't always come down to how complex the project is. Often, it's 3 fundamental elements that make all the difference: proportions, materials, and attention to detail.

Proportions (and fit)
When you're making a costume, make sure you take your measurements carefully. But above all, take the time to run tests during construction: make a mock-up to validate the fit and proportions of the design, etc. Because even a beautifully made costume won't look professional if it doesn't fit well and the proportions are off.
Same goes for your accessories, proportions are essential there too! Your sword shouldn't be the same size whether you're 5'2" or 6'4". Again, run tests: build a preliminary version, check the dimensions, compare the pieces together… and hold them up against yourself too to see the full look.
Take the time to measure carefully and compare the pieces together to get a good fit, good proportions, and cohesion in your project.

Choice of materials
I'm not saying some materials are necessarily better than others, but some materials are better suited to certain projects. More or less sturdy, flexible, easy to work with, to cut, to glue, to paint, etc. I've seen people make completely wild cosplays out of salvaged cardboard. Proof that it doesn't need to cost a fortune. What matters is mastering whatever material you're using, if you want to get the most out of it.
When it comes to fabric, it's the same as with other materials: you want something suited to the project, but you also want to really know how to work with it.
So take the time to look at the texture, to add depth to your piece. And look at the drape too, it can completely change the style of a costume (askirt made from the same pattern will look completely different depending on whether it's made in chiffon, faux leather, or twill). That said, make sure you're comfortable working with the fabric you choose! The most beautiful materials in the world will never look professional if they're poorly assembled.
Make sure to use materials suited to your project, choose something interesting, and above all, know how to work with it properly.

Attention to detail
Attention to detail starts right from the beginning of a project. Really studying your character will help you throughout the build to accurately recreate the costume.
But it's especially true for the finishing touches: don't be afraid to take your time to get beautiful finishes. A hand-sewn hem takes a long time to do, but it gives a truly professional look. When in doubt, always run tests to use the right techniques and make sure the final result will live up to your expectations.
Attention to detail doesn't stop at delicate finishing either. It's also about taking the time to weather (age) your costume to give it more life. It's finishing the inside of your armor cleanly to make sure it looks flawless from every angle...
Observe and pay attention to detail. Take your time, run tests, and don't cut corners.
